DLC to follow Alan Wake

Microsoft has revealed plans to deliver post release content for Alan Wake. The retail game is said to be episodic in nature and, according to a report published on CVG, additional episodes will follow in the form of DLC. Given that Max Payne developer Remedy Entertainment has taken five years (and counting) to bring the game to market, the announcement could be perceived as somewhat optimistic. Let’s just hope that deadline pressure hasn’t resulted in episodes being pruned from the retail version of the game for repurposing as DLC.

Alan Wake is being promoted as a ‘psychological thriller’. As the titular suspense novelist, you’re investigating the disappearance of your wife. You’re scouring town and country in a desperate attempt to find her when you stumble across pages from a book that you seem to have authored but have no recollection of. Stranger still, the pages relate directly to the grim circumstances in which you find yourself.

Alan Wake is due for release on Xbox 360 in autumn 2010. Plans for a PC version of the game have, at least for the moment, been shelved.

The Black List 18 Image

Welcome to the Black List, our regular retrospective on the week in games.

On Monday, we encouraged Melbournians to visit the Best of the Independent Games Festival at ACMI.

On Tuesday, we strapped on our jetpacks in anticipation of Dark Void Zero, Capcom’s forthcoming tribute to the 8-bit era.

On Wednesday, we braved the fires of hell to review Darksiders, the apocalyptic action game from THQ and Vigil Games.

On Thursday, we revealed Microsoft’s Game Room, a retro themed virtual arcade that definitely… probably… hopefully… isn’t a clone of Sony’s Home environment.

On Friday, we took a look at the new Metro 2033 trailer from THQ and 4A Games and elected to postpone our trip to Moscow.

Finally, I can’t sign off without mentioning that the 2010 season of The Black Panel Podcast kicks off on Monday night. Don’t miss it!

Thanks for reading.

Survival of the fittest

A new promotional clip has emerged for Metro 2033, the grim first person shooter from THQ and Ukrainian developer 4A Games.

A nuclear catastrophe has rendered the surface world uninhabitable and as protagonist Artyom, you have spent your entire life in the nigh unbearable confines of the crumbling Moscow subway system. While the idea of a quick stroll outside may seem tantalising, the new trailer confirms the tunnels beneath Moscow are unlikely to qualify for the Neighbourhood Watch program.

It seems the underworld is haunted by a mysterious race known as the Nova Homus. According to your guide, these highly evolved creatures are set to replace humanity are surely as DVD replaced VHS. Given humanity’s track record, the idea of giving someone else a shot actually seems more than reasonable. Nevertheless, it will be up to you to ensure humanity’s ongoing survival.

Metro 2033 is due for release on PC and 360 in 2010.
