New vision of Brink

Posted by Erin Marcon On Friday 19 March 2010ADD COMMENTS

Bethesda Softworks has released a new cinematic trailer for Brink, the forthcoming sci-fi shooter from multiplayer specialists Splash Damage.

Though pre-rendered, the trailer serves as an introduction to the rhythm and structure of the game’s brutal class-based combat. Acrobatic commando types clash with heavily armoured behemoths and stealthy assassins. Combatants are shot, stabbed, blown up and crushed in quick succession.  It seems that life is cheap in the post apocalyptic world of Brink, just as it is here at Black Panel HQ.

The trailer also highlights the potential of the context sensitive SMART system, a one-button command that enables players to glide through the environment with spectacular ease. While such systems have proven popular in solo third person platformers such as Prince of Persia, it will be interesting to see how it effective it is in a crowded first person environment.

Brink is due for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in spring 2010.

Say you want a revolution

Square Enix has issued a new trailer for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the long awaited sci-fi sequel from Eidos Montreal. The brief clip features a lavish interpretation of the Icarus fable, a hard living cyborg who may be our new protagonist and (as we’ve come to expect) no gameplay footage whatsoever.

According to a FAQ published on the Eidos website, Human Revolution will be set 25 years before the events of original game. As security expert Adam Jensen, you will be drawn into a deadly conspiracy. In order to survive, you’ll be forced to give up a piece of your humanity. Actually, make that quite a few pieces.

Released in 2000, the original Deus Ex was the brainchild of Warren Spector, the acclaimed producer of Wing Commander and System Shock. A celebrated cyberpunk mystery, Deus Ex is often credited with imbuing the first person shooter genre with the cerebral qualities of an RPG.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. A release date is not yet available.

InXile back in the hunt

Those marathon sessions of Wii Sports Resort really paid off.

Those marathon sessions of Wii Sports Resort really paid off.

Bethesda Softworks has revealed that it will publish Hunted: The Demon’s Forge, a fantasy action game from InXile Entertainment. The announcement represents a reversal of fortune for InXile, which was left high and dry by the cancelation of Hei$t just a few months ago.

InXile founder Brian Fargo, best known for his work on The Bard’s Tale, will oversee development of what he describes as “fresh take on the dungeon crawlers we grew up on”.

The game is set in a dark fantasy world known as Kala Moor. As either an expert archer or brutal swordsman, you’ll be called upon to investigate a series of kidnappings. Both characters are crucial to the outcome of the quest and there will be numerous opportunities for cooperative combat and puzzle solving.

Bethesda is yet to announce a release date for Hunted: The Demon’s Forge, which will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

The big Move

“Why do these garage door remotes have to be so damned complicated!”

Sony has revealed new details regarding its forthcoming response to the Wii Remote, now known as the PlayStation Move Motion Controller. While some PS3 games will be playable using only the Motion Controller, others will also require the use of the Sub-Controller, a secondary peripheral featuring a thumb stick, d-pad and additional buttons. If the dual set-up sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve been using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in tandem for the past three years.

Though clearly influenced by the competition, Sony has brought a modicum of innovation to the table. The Motion Controller is designed to work in conjunction with the console’s existing camera peripheral, the PlayStation Eye. According to Sony, this will enable the system to map the exact position of the controller in three dimensions. Will this mean true one-to-one motion control? That’s the claim. Furthermore, unlike Nintendo’s Nunchuk, the Sub Controller is wireless, allowing greater freedom of movement.

A range of titles have also been announced for the device. Though it features much more realistic graphics, SPORTS CHAMPIONS looks to be a response to Nintendo’s ubiquitous Wii Sports series. Potentially more interesting is SLIDER, a fast moving action title in which the protagonist is seemingly confined to an office chair. (I think we’ve all felt that way at some point).

The family friendly MOVE PARTY is an EyeToy style mini game collection. At the opposite end of the spectrum, DUKES features bare fisted boxing in what appears to be an underworld fight club. THE SHOOT requires you to use the Motion Controller controller as a virtual gun, while TV SUPERSTARS casts you in the role of a game show contestant.

Sony also revealed that forthcoming military shooter SOCOM 4 will support but not require PlayStation Move. A number of existing titles including EYEPET and LITTLEBIGPLANET will be updated to support the device.

PlayStation Move will be launched in spring 2010.
