After a decade in the wilderness, one of PC gaming’s most celebrated franchises is set to return. 2K Games today announced that XCOM is being re-imagined as a first person shooter, a decision certain to rile diehard followers of the sci-fi strategy saga. Of course, this isn’t the first time that the series has deviated from its turn-based roots, the most obvious example being XCOM Enforcer, a poorly received third person shooter from 2001.
The good news this time around is that 2K Marin, the studio responsible for BioShock 2, will be overseeing the project, with the well credentialed 2K Australia also playing a leading role. As a thus far unidentified FBI officer, you’ll be investigating a wide ranging conspiracy that threatens (drum roll please) the very existence of the human race. What kind of threat are we talking about here? Well, 2K are remaining mum for now, but anyone who recalls what XCOM stands for probably has a pretty good notion.
XCOM will be released on PC and Xbox 360. A release date is yet to be announced.
