Limbo trailer brings the scary

Danish developer Playdead is poised to release one of the more unsettling indie titles of the year. The latest trailer for Limbo draws viewers into a monochromatic world of mist and shadow. From the seashore to the city, the environments seem to have one thing in common, an atmosphere of corruption and decay.

In terms of gameplay, Limbo looks to be a straightforward 2D platformer with the occasional puzzle component. However, the game’s horrific imagery and claustrophobic sound design may take it to a higher level. The trailer is beautifully edited, artfully cutting away whenever the game’s young protagonist appears certain to die. A sense of dread builds steadily throughout the one minute running time.

At this point, Limbo has only been confirmed for the Xbox Live Arcade. Microsoft’s online portal has proven to be fertile ground for indie developers in recent years. The service already features the likes of ‘Splosion Man, Braid and The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. Will Limbo reach the same heights as these celebrated titles? We’ll find out in winter 2010.
