Square Enix is finally bringing an original Final Fantasy adventure to the juggernaut that is the Nintendo DS. Plot-wise, Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light looks set to take up a fairy-tale vibe as the young, probably effeminate, boy you play must rescue the youngest princess of the King who was inconveniently kidnapped by the misunderstood Witch of the North.

The quest will involve you mastering the Crown job system, turn based combat and customisable abilities that also allow you to link with up to three other players as you conquer dungeons and defeat the various monsters.  Square Enix promises that the over 20 potential Crown jobs you can choose from will not limit your customisation of magic abilities and skills, which will make it a refreshing change after the streamlined Final Fantasy XIII experience.

Graphically this instalment of the Final Fantasy series continues the tradition of utilising the strong creative vision of its designers so fans will be thrilled to have the talented Akihiko Yoshida (Final Fantasy XII) providing character designs.

An Australian release date is yet to be announced for Final Fantasy: Four Heroes of Light.

DeathSpank trailer promises “several unicorns”

Hothead Games has issued a new trailer has for forthcoming fantasy romp DeathSpank. The game is the brainchild Ron Gilbert, co-creator of classic LucasArts adventures Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island. Though DeathSpank is ostensibly a loot centric action RPG, it will also feature the madcap dialogue and bizarre puzzles that Gilbert is famous for.

Taking a leaf from the well worn Hollywood playbook, Hothead has described the game as “Monkey Island meets Diablo”. While this would normally suggest a whole lot of pointing and even more clicking, DeathSpank will be coming to consoles first, with a potential PC release on the backburner for the moment.

This will be the first project from Hothead since the Canadian developer revealed that it had cancelled the long awaited third instalment of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. Though DeathSpank was itself conceived as a series of episodes Gilbert recently confirmed that it has since been restructured and is now an entirely self contained game.

Look for DeathSpank on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in winter 2010.
