On MONDAY, Erin was crushed, dismembered, impaled and electrocuted while reviewing Limbo, an indie puzzle platformer that he concedes is “a bit scary”.

On TUESDAY, we covered the announcement of fan service blockbuster Street Fighter X Tekken.

On WEDNESDAY, Joel survived a six car pile-up and celebrated by reviewing Disney Interactive’s action packed racer Split/Second: Velocity.

On THURSDAY, we brought you the latest on SOCOM 4, Dead Rising 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops and more in nanoBITES our ongoing feature devoted to small but important news items.

On FRIDAY, we reported on the announcement of Project: MyWorld, the latest effort from the creators of APB.

Lay down your guns

The creators of brutal gangland MMO All Points Bulletin have announced Project: MyWorld. The latest effort from Realtime Worlds may sound like a mad scientist’s plan for world domination, but it is in fact a friendly online space designed to encourage creativity and (wait for it) foster a sense of community. Put your hand up if you saw that one coming. Okay, put your hand back down. You’re not impressing anyone. Plus, you’re a liar.

Project: MyWorld is a virtual recreation of Earth in which players are encouraged to create, customise and exchange properties, as well as compete in mini games such as racing, flying and fishing. It appears that there will also be a strong emphasis on Facebook and Twitter connectivity. The developer describes Project: MyWorld as a blend of “social media, social gaming and traditional gaming.”

Project: MyWorld is schedule for release on PC in early 2011, which in MMO speak probably means late 2012.

NanoBITES captures those small but important morsels of gaming information that otherwise might slip between the cracks.

ITEM! Downloadable prequel Dead Rising 2: CASE ZERO is coming to XBLA on the last day of August. It will feature the debut of Chuck Greene, the motorcycle riding zombie wrangler set to take centre stage in September’s Dead Rising 2.

ITEM! Codemasters is preparing to crank out at least three new sequels. Company Vice President Gavin Cheshire told Develop that work has commenced on new iterations of military shooter Operation: Flashpoint and racing titles Dirt and Grid.

ITEM! SOCOM 4 has been delayed. Zipper Interactive’s Move compatible PlayStation 3 exclusive will now be released in 2011, well after the September 2010 launch window of Sony’s motion sensing peripheral.

ITEM! Sony has announced EverQuest II Extended, a free-to-play (micro-transaction supported) edition of its long running fantasy MMO. Producer David Georgeson told Gamasutra that Extended will co-exist with the subscription based original.

ITEM! Activision has revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops is on its way to the Nintendo DS, courtesy of n-Space. The developer describes the game as a “companion product” to the home console versions.

Split/Second: Velocity Review

Posted by Joel Guttenberg On Wednesday 28 July 2010ADD COMMENTS

In homage to Split/Second, onomatopoeia and Michael Bay fans everywhere, I will pad out my (CRASH!) review with gratuitous explosive (ZAP!) words to show I that I too love over-the-top explosions, cars, stuff blowing up, moving things, and… BOOM! Get ready for an adrenalin RUSH!

Now, I’m really not a fan of racing games. If the cars require even an ounce of skill, I have trouble. I have no interest in selecting a car based on a myriad of attributes where tiny differences can mean the difference between first and ‘Loser’. I rolled my eyes when Erin asked me to review this game (thankfully, via a phone call), and thought I would be in for a miserable experience. I was wrong. If you’re the kind of person that likes movies by Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, or perhaps Clint Eastwood you’ll want to find a more serious game instead. On the other hand, if you like movies by Michael (BAM!) Bay, Roland Emmerich or McG, then Split/Second fill fit right in with your collection. Read the rest of this entry »
