EA has revealed that a new PC exclusive Battlefield game is in the works. Dubbed Battlefield Play4Free, the latest instalment in the long running series of class based online shooters will be supported by microtransactions. The announcement follows the success (or at least the existence) of Battlefield Heroes, the first game in the series to adopt the free-to-play model.
Where Battlefield Heroes features exaggerated character designs and only a handful of maps, Play4Free promises to be broader in scope and darker in tone. The game will feature the class structure and customisation options of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The maps, on the other hand will be based on classic Battlefield 2 environments, which is either frightfully lazy or a stroke of genius, depending on your perspective.
EA is currently soliciting applications for a closed beta test, with the finished game to launch in autumn 2011. As always, the game will be a tough sell in Australia without a commitment to establish local servers.
