Rock Band creator Harmonix Music Systems has been sold by its parent company Viacom, which published the studio’s titles under its MTV Games label. The acclaimed developer is now owned by Harmonix SBE Holdings, a newly formed affiliate of investment firm Columbus Nova.

According to a report on MTV Multiplayer, Harmonix will retain the rights to both the Rock Band and Dance Central franchises. The developer revealed that multiple unannounced projects are in the works and confirmed that it will continue to support the recently released Rock Band 3 with downloadable content.

Harmonix established its reputation in 2001 with Frequency, a cult hit rhythm game for the PlayStation 2. Four years later, it collaborated with peripheral manufacturer Red Octane to deliver Guitar Hero, a worldwide phenomenon despite its steep retail price. After being sold to Viacom, Harmonix created Rock Band, a game that simulated bass, drums and vocals in addition to guitar.
