Meat shortage hits WiiWare

The long promised WiiWare version of Super Meat Boy has been cancelled. Already available on XBLA and Steam, Team Meat’s diabolically challenging 2D platformer may still find its way to Wii owners in the form of a retail release. However the developer has cautioned that this is unlikely.

Team Meat’s Edmund McMillen told Joystiq that the 40MB limit applied to all WiiWare titles proved to be problematic. “There is no way to avoid the fact that if we released a 40MB version of Super Meat Boy it would be a shit version of the game,” McMillen said. He conceded that Team Meat had long been aware of the restriction but had incorrectly assumed that Nintendo would be willing to raise the maximum file size.

In more positive news, Team Meat has announced that it will add a level editor to the Steam version of Super Meat Boy in mid January 2011. A range of indie creators have agreed to contribute custom levels, including BIT.TRIP developer Gaijin Games. These levels, along with the best community generated content, will also be included in a forthcoming DLC pack for the XBLA version of the game.
