Square Enix has surprised the industry by confirming that it is working on Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel to last year’s critically divisive Final Fantasy XIII. If the solitary screenshot provided along with the press release is any guide, the game will again feature sword wielding heroine Lightning in a key role. To be clear, this is a new title, not the previously announced Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which remains in production.
The Japanese publisher has also revealed that the PSP bound Final Fantasy Agito XIII has undergone a name change. As reported by Joystiq, the action oriented RPG will now be known as Final Fantasy Type-0. That’s what you get for assuming that an already impenetrable numbering system couldn’t become even more obscure.
At this point, we should probably remind you that neither Final Fantasy Type-0 nor Final Fantasy Versus XIII feature the characters and settings established in Final Fantasy XIII. Truly, the inmates are running the asylum at Square Enix.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due for release on 360 and PS3 in the summer of 2011/12. We’re still waiting on western release dates for the remaining titles.
