Monsters or marshmallows?

Following its announcement at last year’s Tokyo Game Show, we’ve seen precious little of Dark Souls. Namco Bandai and From Software have finally thrown us a bone, however, issuing an atmospheric new trailer for the game formerly known as Project Dark.

Though technically an original property, this brooding third person action RPG is very much a spiritual successor to From Software’s own PS3 exclusive Demon’s Souls. The rights to that particular franchise are held by Sony, necessitating a fresh start for this multiplatform release.

The new game will challenge you to leave behind the warmth and safety of your campfires in order to face a gloomy dungeon overflowing with unspeakable horrors. Sounds inviting, doesn’t it? If Dark Souls is even half as challenging as its predecessor, you’ll be forgiven for hanging around to toast a few more marshmallows.

Dark Souls is due for release on 360 and PS3 in 2011.
