Test Tube – House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut

Welcome to Test Tube. Not to be confused with our full reviews, these ‘two hour test’ articles cover remakes, ports, party games and other titles of interest.

It has been a big year for remakes and Sony continue their re-mastering with House of the Dead: Overkill. Originally released on the Wii console two years ago, it now comes with a fresh coat of HD graphics. Two extra levels, PlayStation Move support and an option for 3D viewing contribute to a game worth playing.

Like most other Move users, I felt a slight bit of remorse after buying the peripheral as the games offered up previously had been extremely mediocre and nothing I could sink my teeth into. House of the Dead changed all of that and enticed me back over and over again to replay levels so that I could grab all the extra goodies and weapons for the all important trophies.

There were six playable characters, each sprouting profanity after profanity. With its high swearing and extremely violent content, the game must have barely scraped in for its MA15+ rating. I played through various houses and clubs, each presented in the 70s Grindhouse style, complete with cheesy narrator and rough grainy camera views. This added to the effect and ensured I didn’t take the game too seriously.

Controlling with the Move was actually perfect. After the initial calibration, there were no glitches and I never needed to recalibrate. It was truly the first Move game where I have not slammed the controller down in frustration. I could also play with the normal PS3 controller but it actually proved harder than with the Move.

Overall this game packs a lot of punch with upgradeable weapons, hundreds of collectables and more foul language and blood than you can poke a stick at, all rolled into that nostalgic 70s theme. This is a great game for horror buffs or fans of the original release.
