It's not easy being green.
Since Steam launched alongside Half-Life 2, hundreds of games have been distributed via the service. It’s seen everything from mainstream blockbusters to rejuvenated classics to obscure indie efforts.
Even as retail releases appear to be slowing to a trickle, Steam keeps pumping out one title after another. It isn’t entirely uncommon for more than a dozen new titles to emerge in a single week. Believe it not, though, Steam owner Valve does knock back its share of projects. Now, the company is inviting its community to become part of the selection process with Steam Greenlight.
The service is due to launch at the end of August and according to Valve, it “will allow developers and publishers to post information and media about their game in an effort to convince the community that their game should be released on Steam.” Users won’t have the final say, of course, but it sounds as if their input will be considered.
What do you make of the new initiative?
