Wipe off 5? The TAC does its bit to boost the zombie toll.

A new zombie themed MMO is shuffling into the frame. The War Z (not to be confused with hit mod DayZ or cult novel World War Z) will be the first project to emerge from LA developer Hammerpoint Interactive.

While the setting for the PC release seems largely generic, the feature set looks marginally more interesting. The game can be tackled in either normal mode, in which players respawn after death, or hardcore mode, in which death spells the end. Players will be able to pursue bounties, set traps, buy and sell equipment and, of course, help or hinder each other’s progress. The post apocalyptic streets will be viewable from either the first or third person perspective.

Of course, the creators of The War Z won’t have the genre entirely to themselves. Seattle based studio Undead Labs announced a similarly themed project back in 2009. The race is now on to see if either MMO can make it to market before the real zombie apocalypse sweeps civilisation aside. Hammerpoint’s parent company and publisher Arktos Entertainment Group has set an aggressive launch window of spring 2012 for The War Z.
