Apogee software is reviving its long dormant Rise of the Triad property in partnership with Danish studio Interceptor Entertainment. The remake was announced at this week’s QuakeCon, fitting given that its predecessor was first conceived as a Wolfenstein 3D expansion. In a blow to romantics everywhere, the reboot will run on Unreal Engine 3, rather than, say, id Tech 5.

Released in 1994, Rise of the Triad: Dark War was a first person shooter in which you stormed the headquarters of a Naziesque cult and pretty much killed everything that moved using a truly bizarre set of weapons. According to the press material, the new version will be “bloodier and more ludicrous than ever, with full character and enemy dismemberment”. The soundtrack is being “reforged in the fires of heavy metal”, so there’s that also.

Rise of the Triad will be released on Steam on a date yet to be specified.
