Sony has unveiled an original IP for its just announced PlayStation 4 console. A colourful action platformer, Knack takes place in a society besieged by warmongering goblins. Just as it seems that there is no hope of staving off the invaders, a long lost secret weapon is unearthed and given new life.
The appealing title character has some rather special qualities, including the capacity to absorb objects, a process that allows him to increase his mass and unlock new abilities. According to game director Mark Cerny, the initially diminutive Knack will eventually become “a gigantic wrecking machine”.
In describing the formula for Knack, Cerny has suggested that it is “a little bit like Crash Bandicoot, and a little bit like Katamari Damacy, in that the Knack can get quite large indeed. There’s also a touch of God of War in there, in that there is an epic feel to the game in places.”
Knack is in development at Sony’s Japan Studio, best known for its work on the Ape Escape and LocoRoco franchises. A release date is yet to be revealed.
