After confusing the mainstream with its Wii naming protocols (“Yeah, I want that Wii U thing for my Wii”), Nintendo is now determined to bring its very specific brand of insanity to the handheld space. Believe it or not, the next 3DS model will be known as the ‘2DS’. As the new unit’s name strongly implies, the 3D functionality has been stripped out in an attempt to hit a lower price point and (some have speculated) assuage parental fears regarding 3D displays.
In terms of functionality, it plays all existing and (one can only assume) future 3DS titles in glorious 2D. It also ditches the clamshell configuration of the bestselling 3DS and 3DS XL models in favour of a single surface. According to the platform holder, this entirely unexpected device is “designed as an entry point into… the Nintendo handheld experience”.
The 2DS will retail for AU $149.95 (about $50 cheaper than the 3DS and $100 cheaper than the XL) when it lands on Saturday 12 October 2013. Oh, and you’ll have a choice of red or blue.
