After a massive Twitter kountdown and tease from creator Ed Boon, as well as a few leaked posters, it has finally been konfirmed that Mortal Kombat is coming back to systems everywhere. The game will be kalled Mortal Kombat X, which kould refer to the fact that it is the tenth game in the series or it kould have a deeper meaning that has yet to be revealed.

The announcement of Mortal Kombat X was accompanied by a brutal trailer featuring everyone’s favourite ninjas Sub Zero and Scorpion beating the tar out of each other. The footage looked to be cinematic and not gameplay but it did feature several elements that may indicate which way the game is going. Environmental damage and x-ray moves both featured as well as a fairly nasty fatality.

In a press release Ed Boon stated that the “team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all new graphics engine.” The press release also went on to say that there will be multiple versions of each kharacter (one would imagine that there would be both a cyber and human version of Sub Zero for example), an all new story and a fully konnected online persistent gameplay experience. What that entails no one knows as yet.

With NetherRealm Studios and Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment both promising more information at E3, as well as some gameplay footage, there is a lot to look forward to for the many fans of the long running fighting series.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to release on all the home platforms known to man… apart from the Wii U… in 2015.
