Warp Review

Posted by Joel Guttenberg On Thursday 22 March 2012ADD COMMENTS

Warp revolves around a fun idea, the kind of idea you could image being born over beer and pizza.

Gamer Designer 1: “So, what if there was an alien and he was captured by these asshole” scientists?”

Gamer Designer 2: “Yeah! And he can, like, warp places, and solve puzzles and stuff!”

Gamer Designer 3: “Wait! What if he could, like, warp into someone?”

All: “…”

All: “…and make them explode! AWESOME!”

The action strategy revival is set to continue with Swedish developer Zeal Game Studios revealing that it is working on a new multiplayer entry in the genre. Set in the far reaches of a war torn universe, R.E.D. Frontier will see players hammer seven shades of the proverbial out of one another in a desperate attempt to secure precious fuel supplies.

If the announcement trailer can be considered a reliable guide, each player will control a hero character backed by a small but deadly entourage of robots and vehicles. According to publisher Paradox Interactive, R.E.D. Frontier will adopt a structure common to multiplayer first person shooters, in so far as players eliminated from the contest will instantly respawn. The game will support up to a dozen players per session and a range of customisations and unlockables will be up for grabs.

R.E.D. Frontier will join Red Faction and Red Orchestra in the burgeoning red subgenre when it arrives on PC later this year. Alas, both publisher and developer are being remarkably tight lipped about what R.E.D. actually stands for. Any suggestions?

ITEM! Dark Energy Digital, the studio responsible for undersea sci-fi action game Hydrophobia, is in the hands of administrators according to a story published by GamesIndustry International.
