This was a tale of two sessions, one devoted to this highly anticipated shooter’s multiplayer component, the other to its single player campaign. The former was solid but unremarkable, the latter a powerful reminder of what developer Crytek is capable of. Both took place in a decimated New York City dominated by the villainous Cell Corporation.

INTERVIEW l PREVIEW

Coming to 360 and PS3 l Published by EA l Developed by Insomniac Games l Classification TBA l Supports 1-8 players l Due to arrive March 2013

As I wandered over to the four player Fuse terminal, I quietly promised myself that I wasn’t going to be the weak link in this team based third person shooter. As long ranged weapons specialist Jacob Kimble, I would be responsible for thinning out opposition ranks long before we reached them and eliminating enemies perched high above the level. Inexplicably, instead of concentrating on the task at hand, I found myself staring intently at the purple wristband that had been handed to me at the start of the session. When the rep called for volunteers, I should have kept a low profile, hovered at the back, bided my time. Instead I reached for the controller… and the horror began. Read the rest of this entry »

SimCity Preview

Available on PC l Published by EA l Developed by Maxis l Classification TBA l Number of players TBA l Due to arrive 07.03.13

I was utterly obsessed with the original SimCity during my teen years. So shameful was my addiction to this strategy classic, that I dodged longstanding commitments in order to further expand my towering metropolis. On one now infamous occasion, I repeatedly excused myself from a gathering of family and friends in order to “go to the toilet”.  While most probably assumed that I had a touch of gastro, the truth was far worse. A reptilian horror had emerged from the sea and was rampaging through the heart of my city. It wasn’t the kind of thing I could place on the backburner, at least not if I wanted to be seen as a responsible mayor. In the years since, I’ve dabbled with the series here and there, without ever really recapturing the feeling I enjoyed as a lad. Read the rest of this entry »
