Welcome to the fourth annual edition of New Horizons. You can forget about sequels and spin-offs, because our massive preview special is overflowing with new and original games.

Just how far are you willing to go to secure victory? Vita exclusive fantasy action game SOUL SACRIFICE allows you to give up your own body parts in order to fuel your magical attacks. You can blame Mega Man legend Keiji Inafune for this short sighted approach to resource management. If you’re feeling a little squeamish about it, you can always sacrifice one of your co-op partners instead. You know, for the “greater good”.

Given the sheer number of zombie games already available, it can’t be easy to come up with a snappy new title. That’s why we’re impressed with STATE OF DECAY. Sure, the name isn’t quite as infectious as Left4Dead, but it’s a big step up from Touch the Dead and for that, we’re grateful. With a focus on gathering resources and improving defences, this open world survival game from Undead Labs is set to arrive on XBLA and PC in early 2013. Read the rest of this entry »

Playing a ninja is all well and good, as is playing a cop (and in some cases, a ninja cop) but it does become a little repetitive after a while. That’s why you’ll jump at the chance to play a journalist in OUTLAST. As you confront the horrors lurking within a (supposedly deserted) insane asylum, you’ll almost certainly come to regret this decision. This downloadable PC game will be the first cab off the rank for indie developer Red Barrels.

Do you want the good news or the bad? Start with the bad? Okay. All members of the Wraeclast welcoming committee are deceased. The good news? This won’t stop them from greeting you as soon as arrive on their golden shores (where they’ll probably kill you). An action RPG in the vein of Diablo, PATH OF EXILE is currently in open beta. This free-to-play PC title is the brainchild of New Zealand developer Grinding Gear Games. Read the rest of this entry »

Left to his own devices, HAROLD won’t make a lot of progress in the game that bears his name. With your help, though, he just might make it through Moon Spider’s beautifully rendered 2D obstacle course. As his guardian angel, you’ll lower ramps, sever ropes and summon platforms, all in an effort to see him to the finish line.  Harold is due on PC and unspecified consoles (presumably the Atari Jaguar and Commodore Vic 20) in autumn.

The climate probably isn’t right for a new instalment of Pro Cycling Manager. What a relief, then, that Cyanide Studios is setting aside its earlier franchise in favour of IMPIRE. In this PC strategy game, players stock their underground lairs with monsters and traps designed to eliminate pesky adventurers. Unless Oprah can convince a prominent dungeon master to ‘come clean’, Cyanide should be on fairly safe ground this time around. Read the rest of this entry »
