Big Brother 3

The Black Panel has long embodied the principles of love and fidelity. If only the same could be said for our shamefully mercenary writers, who insist on fraternising with our competitors. This column allows us to monitor and catalogue their treasonous activities.

Our blatantly disloyal editor Erin Marcon has taken to the pages of Hyper 211 in an attempt to dissuade you from trading in your PSP. Meanwhile, new Black Panel contributor Jennifer Christodoulou has reviewed The Silver Lining in PC PowerPlay 190. Both issues hit the stands today!

The Black Panel’s Peter Nickless is the lead guitarist for MANIC, a hard rocking four piece from Bendigo, Victoria. The band recently uploaded three tracks (Time, Chapters and Scarred) to the Triple J Unearthed Website. Have a listen and be sure to rate the boys highly!

The Black List 81

Welcome to The Black List, your one stop shop for all of the stories published on the site this week.

MONDAY l REVIEW l Bulletstorm > From its chunky character designs to its post-apocalyptic landscape, Bulletstorm is sure to remind you of its Epic Games stablemate Gears of War. However, the new release features a far more detailed shooting mechanic and an emphasis on handling multiple enemies. The plot is silly and the multiplayer modes don’t add a lot to the experience, but if you’re looking for over the top action, this is a great place to start. READ MORE

TUESDAY l REVIEW l Spare Parts > Whether you are eight, 80 or anything in-between Spare Parts is not the game for you. That is, unless your idea of good time is to play something bland, uninspired and almost entirely devoid of genuine challenge. Yes you encounter palatable concepts such as robotic combat, upgradable abilities and cooperative play but the developers clearly have no idea what to do with them. READ MORE

WEDNESDAY l NEWS l Gun Loco > Square Enix has confirmed that its mildly anticipated third person shooter Gun Loco has gone the way of the dodo. The publisher has provided no explanation for the decision, merely stating that it has “ceased development” on the project. An Xbox 360 exclusive, Gun Loco had been mooted for a Q1 2011 release. THURSDAY l NEWS l nanoBITES 34 > Aussie iOS developer Firemint has announced Agent Squeek, a rodent themed spy game that requires players to “sneak, sprint and strategize”. The latest offering from the creators of Flight Control is scheduled for release later this year. This is just one of the stories in this week’s edition of nanoBITES, our ongoing feature devoted to small but important news items. READ MORE

FRIDAY l NEWS l Spiral Knights > The free-to-play phenomenon shows no signs of abating, with SEGA announcing that it will publish Spiral Knights. A cooperative online action game for up to four players, Spiral Knights takes place in a world known as Clockworks. As the brief announcement trailer demonstrates, players will not only have to cope with marauding enemies, but also with environments jam packed with steampunk inspired puzzles. READ MORE

Kotaku Australia’s Mark Serrels chats with The Black Panel’s Erin Marcon about the emerging 3D gaming phenomenon.

3D or Not 3D

MARK: So Erin – what’s your take on 3D – is it something you enjoy? Is it something you want in your video games?

ERIN: The recent crop of 3D movies generally had me nursing a headache of Scanners proportions or at the very least massaging the bridge of my nose. The effect was often quite impressive, but the size of the screen, weight of the glasses and elongated running time combined to make me a non-believer. However, about six weeks ago I attended a 3DS preview event and my opinion began to… evolve.
