Forget teasers, here’s 17 mins of Battlefield 4

A new Battlefield game is in the works. We’ve known that for a while now, but this week provided us with our first opportunity to see the game in motion.

While many marquee titles are announced via brief but spectacular montages of pre-rendered action, the Battlefield 4 marketing campaign has kicked off with an extensive gameplay video. In allowing the core gameplay to do the talking, publisher EA has shown a great deal of faith in the latest chapter from series creator DICE.

The 17 minute clip demonstrates that Battlefield 4 will offer the same blend of gruesome gunplay, vehicular mayhem and environmental destruction as its predecessor. In terms of skill, the (unseen) person playing the demo appears to be a fairly average sort of gamer, the kind that most of us can identify with, rather than the typical headshot wizard seen in most YouTube videos.

Battlefield 4 is due for release on 360, PS3 and PC in spring 2013, with no word as yet on our chances of seeing it on next-gen systems.

Square Enix loses top dog, bemoans “weak” sales

“I never should have agreed to these KPIs.”

Not long after EA head honcho John Riccitiello fell on his sword, a second high profile industry figure has given up the fight. Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has stepped aside following the release of revised forecasts suggesting that the publisher is heading towards an “extraordinary” annual loss of AU $132m. Fellow director Yosuke Matsuda will take on the role while the Japanese publisher searches for a permanent replacement.

Square Enix has partially attributed the poor result to “weak” sales of Sleeping Dogs, Hitman: Absolution and Tomb Raider. Considering that these high quality titles shifted 1.8m, 3.6m and 3.4m copies respectively, this is an extraordinary claim, particularly in the case of Tomb Raider, which has been in stores for less than a month. In previous console generations, such figures would have seen each game hailed as a runaway bestseller. It should also be noted that these totals exclude digital sales and sales from outside Europe and North America.
