The Black List 80

Welcome to The Black List, your one stop shop for all of the stories published on the site this week.

MONDAY l NEWS l Bastion > Warner Bros. Interactive has announced plans to publish the debut title from indie start-up Supergiant Games. An isometric fantasy RPG with hand painted environments, Bastion challenges you to rebuild a devastated world. Unfortunately, a hoard of mystical adversaries (including a zeppelin like creature known as a Scumbag) appear determined to thwart your efforts. READ MORE

TUESDAY l REVIEW l Stacking > This Victorian era puzzle adventure features a warm charisma that is hard to resist. Control a series of Russian dolls and employ their unique abilities to overcome a plot as charming as it is dastardly. Most of the challenges are quite straightforward, but unless you can’t do without blood and explosions, you’re sure to find something to enjoy in this short but pleasant downloadable title. WEDNESDAY l OPINION l Sequels, Spin-offs and Remakes > I’d like to see the industry focus more on the development of original properties. Take the 3DS. While the system itself shows a lot of promise, the launch line-up isn’t exactly inspiring, particularly in Australia. Of the 15 or so titles due to arrive on day one, not one is a new IP. How many times do they expect us to buy Ridge Racer or Splinter Cell or Rayman? Speaking more broadly, more than 60% of the games to arrive at retail since the beginning of the year have been sequels, spin-offs, remakes or licensed fare. That, to me, is a little disappointing. THURSDAY l NEWS l nanoBITES 33 > EA has revealed that the music for Crysis 2 was provided by Academy Award winning composer Hans (The Lion King) Zimmer. The latest sci-fi shooter from Crytek is due to arrive on 360, PS3 and PC on Friday 25 March. Hey, that’s next week! This is just one of the stories in this week’s edition of nanoBITES, our ongoing feature devoted to small but important news items. READ MORE

FRIDAY l NEWS l Prey 2 > A new teaser has emerged for alien abduction sequel Prey 2. The predominantly live action clip depicts an awe inspiring close encounter at approximately 30,000 feet, but provides few hints regarding story or gameplay. If early art for the game is any guide, it appears that Cherokee protagonist Domasi ‘Tommy’ Tawodi has been shown the door in favour of a generic military badass, an inspiring decision if ever there was one. A new teaser has emerged for alien abduction sequel Prey 2.

The sequel is due for release in 2012, roughly six years after its predecessor launched on 360 and PC. Considering the original spent more than a decade in development hell, work on the sequel appears to be progressing nicely. Then again, it probably doesn’t pay to get too far ahead of ourselves. Prey 2 will be available on PS3 as well as the aforementioned platforms.

Human Head Studios will again be handling development duties, with new franchise owner Bethesda Softworks set to publish.

The Black Panel has long embodied the principles of love and fidelity. If only the same could be said for our shamefully mercenary writers, who insist on fraternising with our competitors. This column allows us to monitor and catalogue their treasonous activities.

Kotaku Australia’s Mark Serrels chats with The Black Panel’s Erin Marcon about the emerging 3D gaming phenomenon.

3D or Not 3D

MARK: So Erin – what’s your take on 3D – is it something you enjoy? Is it something you want in your video games?

ERIN: The recent crop of 3D movies generally had me nursing a headache of Scanners proportions or at the very least massaging the bridge of my nose. The effect was often quite impressive, but the size of the screen, weight of the glasses and elongated running time combined to make me a non-believer. However, about six weeks ago I attended a 3DS preview event and my opinion began to… evolve.
